My Story Into Construction Marketing
My Journey from Musician to Construction Marketer
If you were to visit my LinkedIn page right now and scroll all the way to the bottom, you’d see a resume that paints the picture of a full-time musician. But the reality is, my career took an unexpected turn in 2018, one that would ultimately lead me down a path I never imagined. Today, I’m excited to share my journey of pivoting from a musician to a marketer in the commercial construction industry.
I grew up in a construction-oriented family, where I watched my dad build his commercial and residential painting company from the ground up. Even from a young age, I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps and eventually run my own business. However, my career trajectory took a far different route than I had initially envisioned.
My journey started with music school, where I dedicated several years to honing my musical talents. Afterward, I found myself working in retail for a prominent music retailer, all while playing countless shows with different bands across Washington state. My musical journey reached new heights when I became the music director for a 10,000-member church.
But everything changed in 2018. I had recently tied the knot, and I felt an itch to explore the world of business. Before taking the plunge, I spent some time researching various business areas, from HR and operations to sales and marketing. As a musician, it’s no surprise that marketing captured my attention. After all, I was drawn to the creative process of marketing, and it resonated with me on a deep level.
I decided to dive deeper into the field of marketing, and it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with it. Every marketing topic I explored became incredibly fascinating, and the individuals I learned from inspired me to pursue this path.
But here’s where the story takes an unexpected twist. To support myself while transitioning from music to business, I put on my painter whites and joined my dad’s industry connections as a painter. During this time, I had the chance to meet the CEO of a commercial painting company, who was helping me in my transition from music to business.
Fast forward in the story, and I found myself offered a sales and marketing role with the painting company I was working for. Eager to get some feedback, I reached out to the CEO for his thoughts. What he said next left me both shocked and thrilled: he suggested that I not only do marketing for their company but also help them build it from the ground up. I couldn’t believe my luck, and after a successful interview process, I landed the job.
In just six months, I had gone from being a full-time musician to an unemployed individual, to a painter, and finally, to a construction marketer. It was a whirlwind journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
